Many of you will recognize that “Tu Mochila Esta Abierta” means “you’re backpack is open.” This title comes from the fact that the song, which of course is inspired by the likes of Tito Puente, Santana and Spanish rock in general, needed a Spanish title and a friend of mine (the musician Dustin Ehrlich) for whatever reason thought that this phrase was quite hilarious after I told him a story involving me walking down the beach in Barcelona and having a group of concerned locals shouting at me to warn me of the perils of my open backpack. Although Dustin does not speak Spanish, he managed to remember this phrase and a few times greated me on the phone with it. Dustin ended up giving me plenty of helpful feedback on the song when we recorded it so I decided to name it in his honor. Patrick Moraz, who guests as organist on this track read deeply into the title, suggesting that it actually refers to an open mind. Since Patrick knows is one of the grand poobahs of music, I’m going to assume that he is correct and that this was a subconscious intention on my part! As you likely can tell, this tune started out being a rehearsal jam for the band which we then started performing live.
