“The Ever Pleasant Notion” is a song begun by Simon Kono and Dave Mason, two childhood friends from Vermont who ended up both being in The DSC when we started the Are You Conspirienced? album. The anthemic opening riff was brought in by the pair (in fact giving the song the working title of “Anthem”) as was the chord progression. I wrote the vocal melody and the lyrics. The song somehow quickly took a Southern style turn as I added slide guitar and began writing lyrics in a gospel-type, confessional style. Like “I’ll See You There” the protagonist of this song wants to believe in a rewarding afterlife, but questions if it is really coming, likely due to the destruction and disease he sees in the world around him. The protagonist is anxious for answers to the questions that have long perplexed humankind as he continues his spiritual quest. To this day I cannot get Simon or Dave to refer to this song as anything other than “Anthem.”
lyrics
So high was the tide
As you heard the waves a-crashing, you could visualize the sight
Washed up on the beach
A hundred homeless animals, their ocean out of reach
We walked right past the sight
Where you hear the ghosts a-whispering of the cautionary night
Dark, dark was the dawn
A thousand hungry faces but we had to keep moving on
There comes a time when the stars align
The clouds will roll away or at least that's what they say
Please, please Lady please
When you're doling out the suffering don't you hand me no disease
I wait here for your grace
But I just can't help from worrying what I might find in its place
I've roamed over the earth, sailed from sea to shining sea
But I couldn't find the answers to the questions ailing me
So I try to stay cool, I try to stay tough
But sometimes my thick skin starts to feel a little rough
I try to hold on to the ever pleasant notion
That there's more to this life than a whirlwind of commotion
And I just keep searching for a shred of evidence
That before I leave this world it might start to make some sense
There comes a time when the stars align
The clouds will roll away or at least that's what they say
So get in line - no time to take your time
But you can take your pay
Save it for a rainy day
Please, please Father please
I am spending half of my whole life down on my bended knees
I wait here for your love
But I just can't keep from wondering what else might come down from above
