“Something In Return” is a song which basically complains about other people I’ve known who are in the arts, who of course want everyone they know (and don’t know) to view their creative work as incredibly important and to give it a great amount of attention, yet who fail to return the same respect to those they ask it from. This is based on several individuals I know, as well as on strangers, such as people who used to send my band page on MySpace a bunch of messages saying “check out our new song!” I would often write back and ask “have you checked out OUR new song?” and would inevitably get in return “well OBVIOUSLY we don’t have time to listen to everybody’s songs!!!” Yeah, exactly. Of course, many of the people written about in this song are people I’ve actually known, from writers to musicians who’ve asked me to read their stuff and give my opinion, look at their websites and give my opinion, etc., and then who failed to give me solicited feedback when I asked them for the same. What could be more frustrating?
I had a bit of fun alluding to some great songs from the history of rock in here. The songs are by Simon and Garfunkel, Little Richard, and the Who. See if you can identify the references!
lyrics
Well hello Mr. Garvey. Invitations to send?
Having trouble deciding are we whom to count as a friend?
All you’ve strived to accomplish, all you’ve done for yourself
Has your admirers delighted, as they watch from their shelves
No thanks, Mr. Hollywood – no need to pick up the bill
We all know you’re so jolly good and your wallet’s quite filled
We quite clearly remember how you were back in school
The extents you would go to to leave no doubt you were cool
If you want everyone to revere you
If you really expect us to be so concerned
If you want us to care about what you create
Then you might want to offer something in return
Well good golly Miss Holly, you stole the show with your song
Too bad as you ascended you couldn’t take us along
Good-bye brother Cisco. She’s gone and left you behind
Although we’re truly sorry, you’re not the first of your kind
If you want everyone to revere you
If you really expect us to be so concerned
If you want us to care about what you create
Then you might want to offer the same in return
Just something in return, just something in return
Look around – take a good hard look at yourself
From the same piece of ground on which we stand
Realize in the grand scale of it all
With a sense of perspective the scale’s not so ground
Too busy Miss Lizzy? No time to pick up the phone?
I hope it won't be too jarring when you find we’re not home
If you want everyone to revere you
If you really expect us to be so concerned
If you want us to care about what you create
Then you might want to offer something in return
Just something in return, just something in return
Give us something in return! Ohhhhhhhh yeah!
