about

As the last lyrical song on the album “Shown the Light” allows the album to conclude on a much more positive and triumphant note than is heard on most of the other songs (save the bristling energy of the instrumental “Tu Mochila Esta Abierta which concludes the theoretical “side one” of the album). This is a song written over a period of many years, as I had the music for it long ago and knew it had to be a love song, yet I was not ready to write such a love song years ago. Only after meeting my wife and reaching a point in life where I could allow my writing to be vulnerable rather than hip could I write the lyrics to “Shown the Light.” As such, I do not expect it to be embraced by young hipsters, but I hope that anyone who has experienced the ups and downs of failed romances on the road to successful romance can appreciate it. Despite the tenderness found within the song, however, it manages to rock out quite well as well.

I like to view this song as sharing a musical space with Led Zeppelin's "Thank You" or GnR's "Sweet Child o' Mine."

lyrics

Tossed from side to side
On this turbulent ride
But it can’t be denied it’s the
Road that’s brought me over to you
You

And all this foolish pride
In a lonely place resides
Over my heart it can’t preside
So I freely turn it over to you
To you, yeah you

As I look back upon the road that’s brought me here
Times when I thought that I would never come so near
To being able to overcome the forces of doubt and fear
But now I see the light it’s never been so clear

Though I must confess
To never knowing such tenderness
Gratitude I do express
For the road that you’ve unraveled for me, for me

As I move forward through this journey of my life
I’ve tasted victory and overwhelming strife
But I can face these things with you here by my side
For I have seen the light beyond the turbulent ride

So I thank you now
You’ve shone the light that’s shown me how
To find my way it’s true
That I owe it all to you

So now I do decide
To let the past be cast aside
That your love won’t be denied for I
Am so satisfied here with you
You – yeah

I’m shown the light thanks to you
I’m shown the light thanks to you
I’m shown the light thanks to you
