about

“I’ll See You There” is one my “existential crisis” songs along with songs like “The Ever Pleasant Notion” from AYC?, “The Valley” from The DSC and Banter songs like “Metaphysics.” In other words, a song which questions the role of God, fate, time and such forces in our lives. The part about “some pompous celebrity” was inspired by a bio of Carlos Santana (also see “Tu Mochila Esta Abierta”) that I saw on the E! network in which he, like many fortunate celebrities who have realized their wildest dreams, discussed how blessed he is that God chose him to live the wonderful life he has. This type of belief that one is thusly chosen has always troubled me. If God made Carlos’ life so great, what about the rest of us? What are we, chopped liver?

lyrics

There was a time when I could believe
The world would provide everything that I'd need
So innocent, ignorant of greed
Now I get down on my knees and I plead
A family tree, geneology
Stacking the decks dealt to you and to me
Geography, the past history
A moment from 500,000 B.C.
It started the chain, guided the path
In one hundred years you could not do the math
To be able to trace back to the event
That determined the future and just how it went

Hey you - do you really think that you're so blessed?
Or are you just the result of chance happening as it does?
Do you really think it's part of some Heavenly master plan
For you to come out ahead of the rest of us?

Time marches on for you and for me
As we try to follow our paths to be free
Opportunity, wealth or poverty
The right to agree, to be blind or to see
Now every time I turn on my TV
And have to hear some pompous celebrity
Explaining on 'E' how they're more blessed than me
I wish they would open their eyes and could see
What started the chain, guided the path
In one thousand years you could not do the math
To be able to trace back to the event
That determined the future and just how it went

Well the world lays waste to some while others live their dreams
But most of us are left to reap our reward for being meek
And the truth that we seek in the world to come
And I hope that it comes, yes I hope that it comes
Don't you hope that it comes? I surely hope that it comes
Well I'll see you there
I'll see you there
I'll see you there, I'll see you there, I'll see you there, I'll see you there
I'll see you there
