about

“Dark Summer” – I wrote the main riff to this song at a time when my friend Bobby Paletta was looking for music to write lyrics to. Upon hearing my riffs Bobby thought it might fit a lyric he’d had going in his head for years about “living in pain.” I took a look through a notebook of his that was filled with lyrics about common themes of dealing with various struggles and afflictions, none of which were quite complete or quite in song form but which had many intriguing ideas and images that I was able to cull together into a whole about the theme of addiction. Wanting to add a twist to the idea of living in pain, I convinced Bobby that we should change it to “living in shame,” putting the focus on the shamefulness of addiction rather than the obvious pain it causes. I somewhat lifted the first two words (and the title) of the song from a demo by Michael Lynch who has often served as “touring bassist” for both Banter and the DSC, but he didn’t seem to mind as he barely seemed to remember his “Dark Summer” song. Like “Mochila,” this song is graced by the keyboard work of the legendary Patrick Moraz who takes the song to a whole new level.

lyrics

Dark summer taking its toll
Dark thoughts taking over my soul
Skeletons I been trying to hide
Take the wheel you’re just along for the ride

Oh, I’m living in shame! Oh, Lord, get me out of this pain!

Mother, mother did the best that she can
You're too old to try to blame her again
Showed us doors to right choices and wrong
I chose the wrong one now I’m singing this song

Oh, I’m living in shame! Oh, Lord, get me out of this pain!

I want to write about my rage but all that’s come out is my sadness
So I hope I can entertain you with my tales of drunken madness
Riding free in the wind and swimming in the ocean
I hope that can convince you that I’m reeling with emotion
Reality check is way overdue!

The world spinning ‘round at the speed of a hound
It kind of makes it hard to keep your feet on the ground
Often life can hit you much faster than light
Jump in the air and you’re pulled right back by gravity’s might
No more running away from you

Drowning sorrows could be your demise
Door 2 might be a new paradise
Stars shining ‘round the full moon in the night
Can mesmerize you if you look at it right

No more living in shame! Oh, Lord, get me out of this game!

A roller coaster ride of steep hills and turns
I coast through it like you got no concerns
Dormant lives awaken in spring
But dark summer can undo everything

Oh, I’m living in shame! Oh, dear Lord, get me out of this pain!

A soul lost while another is found
One day you’re here the next you’re down in the ground
